On Saturday, March 20th, 2010 the United Cerebral Palsy Pucksters will take on the Red Wing Alumni. The charity game, which will benefit UCP/Detroit, is being played at the Viking Ice Arena in Hazel Park. The event will begin at 4:00 pm with a Sled Hockey exhibition featuring the Michigan Sled Dogs and then the Red Wing Alumni-UCP Pucksters game at 6 pm. An afterglow pizza party will follow immediately.
Our 2010 game will be played to honor the memory of Roger McCarville, who helped change the world for the better for those with disabilities, always with a smile on his face. McCarville sat on the boards of United Cerebral Palsy of Metro Detroit, the National and Michigan Easter Seals, and won the “Rick Knas Lifetime Achievement” award from the Athletes with Disabilities Hall of Fame.
Our emcee for the evening will be award-winning comedian Phenecia Banks. Phenecia is a gifted comedian whose passion for the performing arts is only surpassed by her love and desire to please God and to minister to His people in any way He sees fit.
Phenecia has played some of the most prestigious comedy venues throughout the Midwest. In June of 2009, she began taking classes with Spirit of the Moment dance ministries and became a full member in January 2010.
The national anthem will be sung by Kimberly VanBiesbrouck of "Menapause: The Musical".

A special guest Puckster this year is Bryan Gruley, author of the debut novel “Starvation Lake” and the forthcoming “The Hanging Tree” as well as the Chicago Bureau Chief of the Wall Street Journal. He wrote one of the front page stories on Sept. 11, 2001, that won the Journal a 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News. An amateur musician and avid hockey player, he lives in Chicago with his wife Pamela.
All proceeds from this charity event will be used to assist people with disabilities and their families. UCP/ Detroit is a local non-profit advocacy organization representing the needs of all people with disabilities and their families in the Metropolitan Detroit and the Tri-County areas. Eighty-Five percent of every dollar raised from UCP special events is used for programs and services that benefit directly the people we serve.
The Detroit Red Wing Alumni Association, which is the oldest such organization in the NHL, now plays around 30 games a year to the benefit of worthy charities. The alumni roster includes such names as John Ogrodnick, Shawn Burr, Lee Norwood, Dennis Hextall, Pat Peake and Mickey Redmond.
Purchase tickets at the door or by contacting Chaka Harris at (248) 557-5070 ext 151 or Leslynn Angel at Ext 154.
